  • Monsoon 6x9s

I'm seeing a lot of mixed information all over the web in reference to speaker selection for the rear deck speakers on a monsoon stereo. So for those of you who have replaced the speakers (just the speakers) what is the proper replacement specs? 2-4ohm? 2-4way? watt rattings? and an optimal frequency response range?

I'm new to pontiacs for the most part and completely new to the monsoon system. I'm guessing the previous owner of my car had entirely too much going to the rear since they seem to be the only speakers with any type of noticeable damage. Door speakers sound as good as i would expect a stock system to sound but the rear deck is blown for any kind of low end.

    Thank you.

Consensus is that they are 2 ohm from what I have read. I pulled mine out last weekend so here are some pics in case that helps you any.

They are 2ohm speakers. I tested mine with a meter before changing them out. Which ever speakers you replace them with will have to have separate terminals for the woofer and tweeter. The woofer only gets bass and the tweeters have all the bass filtered already from the amp. The Monsoon amp produces about 35 watts per channel so don't worry about blowing anything. I have 200 watt Pioneer 4way 6x9's (temporary) that I modified for the monsoon wiring and they sound pretty good. The mids and highs drown out the door speakers that are still stock. Don't worry about frequency response they will all be pretty close from brand to brand with the selection you will have to choose from. I am a Polk Audio whore so I would suggest them

Thanks for the responses, actually asking for a set for christmas and maybe save me some money!

For anyone whos really good with car stereos im hoping you can answer another question for me. Im also looking at getting an aftermarket unit, nothing major but something a little better with an AUX and USB inputs. something like http://www.crutchfield.com/p_105KDR7...er-reviews-tab. What it really comes down to is whether or not the rear USB will be fully usb 2.0 and able to power a portable HDD that i can tuck away and load up a crap ton of music on. Im using crutchfield because they offer the metra info kit at half off when buying a HU.

This is what is listed for that HU on their site. This suggests that it will work but you will have to format the drive fat32. That means if it is larger then 32gb then you will have to get a utility that will format larger drives in this format as it will not be an option within Windows. I have a 64gb ssd drive in my glove compartment that I formatted in this manner that works just fine. Keep in mind though the larger the drive the longer the radio will take to read it before it begins to play. I wait about 30 secs for music to play and another 2-3 minutes before I can search by artist, song, or album. This is with a top of the line Pioneer so YMMV. I am happy with it but wish I had known beforehand as it was a bit of a surprise. It will also be a pita if the HU does not have a way for you to choose to search by letter. Mine does this and can still take time to scroll if looking for something specific. This is with a 13gb collection formatted in 320kb streaming.

Anyway here is the info on their site:

Dual USB Ports: The JVC KD-R720 features a front-panel USB 2.0 type-A port (behind a sliding cover) and a rear-panel USB 2.0 type-A port (attached to a 45" pigtail) for connection of USB mass-storage class devices. The USB ports enable audio playback and control of MP3 (32-320 kbps), WMA (5-320 kbps), and WAV (705-1411 kbps) audio files stored on portable USB mass-storage class devices formatted in FAT 12/16/32. The head unit can recognize a total of 20,000 files and 2,000 folders (999 files per folder). The unit also supports IDTag3 (version 1.0, 1.1, 2.2, 2.3 or 2.4) for album and artist information from MP3/WMA/WAV files (up to 128 characters).

Note: Both of the USB terminals can be connected to USB devices at the same time. You cannot connect a USB device via a USB hub or Multi-Card Reader to this unit.

              Re: Monsoon 6x9s

fat32 isnt all that bad and since there are like I said utilities to get past the 32gb limitation it works for everything up to 4gb sized files. You can do a computer but from all the research I did it is a pita to keep running properly. Picture a semi stable computer you have to break the dash down in order to work on. I decided it was not worth it for me. I hope it goes well for you, i just got remote start and when I know I am leaving I start it up so the music is playing by the time I get to it. I have gotten use to the delay. Once it is going the performance is very good.

                Re: Monsoon 6x9s

Sorry to go off topic here, but how did you modify the wiring to fit the aftermarket 6x9's? I'm looking at doing this soon and I'm kind of curious on the wiring set up and what I'll need to do to get my JBL's in there.

Okay. So, I've established there are 4 wires for the stock system, 2 for the woofer and 2 for the tweeter. Now, should I just ignore the woofer wire and put the tweeter wire on my JBL, or should I try to return the JBL's and get a Component Infinity Reference set?

I have 2 12''s and I don't really need the 6x9's to output bass, but I'm concerned the tweeter wire will have too high of a frequency for the woofer in the 6x9.

So, my question; Should I keep my coaxial and just connect the tweeter wire? or should I return the 6x9's to Sonic (pain in the ass) and get a component set. Keep in mind I won't be amping the speakers.

I honestly have no input for you bro I am sorry. I pulled the entire stock system and put in new amps and wiring to it all. I didnt enjoy the quality of the monsoon when mixing it with an aftermarket HU.

Installed my new 6x9's on Tuesday seeing as though Santa was kind enough to get me a decent set of Pioneer's. You need to separate the factory wiring of the 6x9, usually pretty obvious what is what depending on the speaker, and hook up the tweeter wires you disconnected straight the to the monsoon high frequency wires. The low frequency seems to also push decent mid range sound to the 6x9's as well so it might still be worth it for you to keep the 6x9 setup with your stand alone woofers. The Monsoon amp gets these rear 6x9's pretty loud off the stock amp.

I must say, I'm a pretty big guy so getting in the back of these coupes to do the work wasn't all that pleasant lol.

did you get a 4 channel amp and new 6x9 and 6.5 doors and run all new wiring? If so, what watt speakers did you go with and how much rms power are you feeding them with your amp. I am trying to see what is a good wattage for great sound quality. I am thinking about geting the Rockford t600-4 with some pioneer 5way 6x9 (100watt rms) and 5 way 6.5 (60 watt rms) and just bypass the factory amp and run new wires.

I did get a 4 channel amp it is NVX and 800w. I replaced the 6x9s, 6.5s, and tweeters and ran all new wiring. I also have a 10" kicker L7 sub running to a 500w kicker mono amp ZX series. The rms on all the front speakers were 125w and they are all Infinity brand. I am quite happy with the setup.
